Runners are often advised to rekindle their love for their sport in down times by remembering the joy and freedom they felt running as a child. But not all children have the freedom to run and play. In Turkey, at least 1 million young people under the age of 18, including both Turkish children and Syrian and other refugees, are spending their childhood working — at least 400,000 of them in grueling seasonal migrant agricultural labor — instead of learning and playing.
Helping some of these children get back to school is the reason why I’m running the 15k race in the Istanbul Marathon on 13 November for Hayata Destek, a Turkish NGO that provides social support to vulnerable communities, and its "This Work is Not Child's Play!" campaign.
For each 250 TL I raise (that’s just $83, 75 Euro, or 64 GBP), Hayata Destek will be able to provide one migrant farmworker child with school supplies, educational materials, and the hygiene items they need in their tent home.
Please help me meet my fundraising goal of 3000 TL ($1000 / 895 Euro / 770 GBP), which will support 12 children in going back to school. All it takes to meet that goal is for 40 of you to donate 75 TL ($25 / 22 Euro / 19 GBP) each! Thank you for your support!
UPDATE: I finished my 15k race in 1:32:59, a best-ever time for me, and thanks to your great support, I've set my fundraising sights higher! Let's keep this going until we can raise 6000 TL and help support 24 kids!
