Neden Koşuyorum

Thanks for being part of my journey

I decided to run my marathon first in 2010 inspired by a dear friend. I was never a runner. I thought I was fit but not that fit.
People usually start with 10K, 15K or half marathons but I have decided to go the full length 42 K. I do this all the time. I do not know how to sew and a while back I decided to do a patch work blanket and I did a king size bed throw. Could have done a baby blanket but no :-)
For the first, second and third marathons, I chose to run in Istanbul. There are several reasons for this. The most important one is that Istanbul is my home and will always be close to my heart. I thought it would be great to run a city where knew every inch of it by heart. Well I thought I knew until I started running it and came around Halic and I had no idea where I was :D If you ever ran a marathon you know exactly how I felt at that point. Knowing your route is crucial in your head you keep reminding yourself the next nearest destination. For me when I was running through Halic I was lost in my thoughts and that was the hardest part of my run. Literally a torture.
The other reason is that it is ever so easy to register unlike big marathons like London, Paris and New York ones. It is also super cheap.
Five years ago when I first ran the Istanbul Marathon, I realised the organisation is no where close to well established marathons. After 15K there were hardly anyone running the full marathon which actually was a great thing. Each 5K the volunteers were giving cube sugar and water to the runners which is quite hilarious really. I overheard one guy saying do they think we are horses.
Two years later though I could see tiny changes and I thought even the cotton t-shirt they were giving has changed to some what dry fit looking running t-shirt sponsored by Vodafone. At 5 K stops there were now slices of orange and apple.
I am really looking forward to this year.
During those years, I did think about raising money for a charity as all do in London and I have sponsored many colleagues and friends but I decided not to. It was almost impossible to find an easy way to raise money for a Turkish Charity organisation. There was no infrastructure.
This year though I got connected with a great charity through a friend. They are really trying hard to change things. There is now a good enough web site to help people to run for a good cause. There are still many glitches but it is wonderful to be part of this journey that my country is going through.
I see more people running, keeping healthy and being part of a greater cause.
So I know this website is not even near to what Just Giving is but still I was woken up by the organiser by phone this morning to check if everything went well in the set up. Where do you get that personal touch. You know that these people are giving their hearts out to make a change. I am so proud to be part of this.
